Confectionery firm Haribo is investing £22 million (about $30.9 million) to install new technology at its manufacturing site at Castleford, West Yorkshire, UK that will boost the site’s capacity, lower costs, and improve efficiency, as well as enable the company to reformulate its existing products.
“Investing £22 million into our already world-class manufacturing facility will give us greater opportunity to produce the variety of sweets that we know bring childlike happiness to our customers. We focus on making great tasting treats that are just sweet enough and will continue to look for ways to reduce sugar content where we can,” Haribo UK Managing Director Jon Hughes told The Yorkshire Post.
Haribo entered the reduced sugar treats market in 2018 with its launch of the Fruitilicious brand in 2018, according to coverage in MTDMFG.com. The products are now among its top 10 selling products.
“While these innovations showcase the changes in our range, it is important to remember that our most popular sweets are still made using the same basic recipe as our first ever Goldbear,” Hughes said in the Pontefract & Castleford Express. “This includes only natural flavorings and colours and with less sugar than our competitors. It’s why we have always been just sweet enough, and why we’ll continue to lead the way in using only as much sugar as we need to deliver the taste and texture that our customers love.”
Last year, the company started work on its first North American manufacturing site in Pleasant Prairie, WI. Haribo said it intends to develop a 136.8-acre parcel in the Prairie Highlands Corporate Park, construct a 487,000-sq-ft production facility and an 87,866-sq-ft warehouse. Several smaller utility buildings and a gatehouse will also be built at the site.
