Conagra to Close Sandwiches Production Plant, Cut 190 Jobs

American food company Conagra Brands is preparing to permanently close the Sandwich Bros. production plant in Milwaukee, WI this April, impacting 190 workers at the site, according to documents the firm filed with the state this week and local news reports.

On January 25, Conagra sent a notice to the Wisconsin Bureau of Workforce Training outlining its intent to shutter the 81^st Street facility in the spring. 172 production and production support workers and 18 management and administrative workers will be separated from the company as a result of the decision.

Frozen breakfast sandwiches and entrée flatbread sandwiches are produced at Conagra’s Sandwich Bros. plant in Milwaukee, the Milwaukee Business Journal reported.

A decision was made to shut down the plant “to improve efficiencies and effectiveness within [Conagra’s] supply chain network,” the company said in a WARN notice.

“Conagra’s decision to close the Milwaukee Facility will affect all employees and is expected to be permanent. Based on current projections, it is anticipated that the Milwaukee Facility will close on April 2, 2021, or within fourteen days. All employee separations will occur on April 2, 2021, or within fourteen days,” Conagra stated.

The workers are not part of a union and the staff at the site does not have bumping rights.

Conagra purchased Sandwich Bros. of Wisconsin in 2018.
