Explosion Forces 60,000 People Indoors

An explosion at a chemical plant in Igualda, Spain (40 miles from Barcelona) Thursday left an orange cloud over the area that forced more than 60,000 residents to remain inside their homes with the windows closed.

According to reports, the explosion took place at about 9:45 am at a chemical facility owned by Simar, during a loading and unloading operation involving two chemical products, nitric acid and ferric chloride. An explosive reaction occurred between the chemicals, resulting in a fire that pumped gases into the air. Three people who were handling the materials received minor injuries, as did three firefighters.
