The joint venture installed a new production line at its plant in Ako, Japan to meet rising domestic and international demand.

Specialty chemicals firm Evonik announced Monday that its joint venture with Japanese pharmaceutical company Shionogi, DSL Japan, has opened a new production line for specialty silicas at its facility in Ako, Japan. The project increased its capacity for custom silica solutions by 30% to meet rising domestic and international demand.

Silica products made at the Ako plant are used in a number of industries and applications, including automotive, food and beverage, and agrochemicals.

“We are confident that this expansion will not only meet the strict requirements of our Japanese customers, but also the demands of our overseas customers,” said Dr. Florian Kirschner, president of Evonik Japan, in a statement. “We believe that we can contribute with highly functional silica solutions to the sustainable growth of these businesses.”

The new production line can customize the structure and pore size distribution of the silica based on the needs of customers.

“We are very proud that we could execute this important project despite the severe conditions of COVID-19 and meet our customers’ expectations regarding the ambitious project schedule,” said Kenichi Kawamoto, president of DSL Japan, in the release.
