A worker died at the Western NY Concrete plant in Batavia, NY Tuesday afternoon after becoming trapped in a stone dust hopper, according to officials and local news reports.
Emergency personnel were dispatched to the East Main Street location at 12:57 p.m. after receiving a call that the man was stuck in the bin at the facility, a release issued by the Batavia Police Department stated.
“The city fire department was able to extricate the victim but he was pronounced dead at the scene,” the police department wrote. “The victim was identified as Randy Ridd, 64, of Batavia.”
The Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office is working to ascertain how the man died. Police said an initial investigation indicates the incident was accidental in nature.
Interim Fire Chief Dan Herberger told the Batavia Daily News that the hopper holds fine stone dust, which the company uses to produce concrete. The official said Ridd fell into the vessel and became engulfed by the dust.
