Plastics and chemicals producer LyondellBasell broke ground on a high density polyethylene (HDPE) production plant at the firm’s La Porte, TX complex, the company announced Monday.

Scheduled for completion in 2019, the plant will have a production capacity of 1.1 billion lb/yr of HDPE and employ 75 permanent workers. LyondellBasell’s proprietary Hyperzone PE technology will be used in production at the new site, which enables company to produce a variety of HDPE products that formerly required multiple production sites under one roof.

“Today represents the launch of our latest innovation in plastics technology,” said Bob Patel, the firm’s chief executive officer, in a statement. “The new Hyperzone PE plant will produce a better plastic that advances solutions to modern challenges, like protecting the purity of water supplies through stronger and more versatile pipes and ensuring the freshness of bulk foods by providing tough, crack-resistant containers for storage.”

LoyondellBasell said its 550-acre La Porte site, one of the firm’s largest manufacturing facilities, was chosen for the new plant because of its location near feedstocks and transportation infrastructure. The project will enable the complex to double its annual capacity of PE to 2 billion lb, or 900,000 mt.

The project in Texas is part of the company’s plan to invest between $3-$5 million in the U.S. Gulf Coast, the company said.
