SPI Joins Recycling Partnership

SPI: The Plastics Industry Trade Association is an inaugural member of The Recycling Partnership, a grant fund established by the Curbside Value Partnership (CVP) as a vehicle to support and transform public recycling performance.

“SPI is deeply committed to zero waste strategies that promote reducing, reusing and recycling plastic materials,” said SPI president and CEO William R. Carteaux. “Because our members represent the entirety of the plastics supply chain, SPI has emerged as a valuable stakeholder in the recycling discussion with an important, unique perspective.”

Kim Holmes, SPI’s director of recycling and diversion, added, “We support stronger plastics recycling solutions in the U.S. and the Recycling Partnership lines up with our goals.”

Noting that she’s pleased with the support of what is recognized to be one of the most innovative and solution-based approaches to boosting recycling recovery rates in the U.S., Karen Bandhauer, project director for CVP, said, “We welcome SPI as an early adopter of the Recycling Partnership as we launch our work July 1.”

The Recycling Partnership will develop projects that ensure overall recycling program health in targeted communities. Project work will begin in July following an announcement of the finalized list of partners and the identification of initial cities selected for partnership. By seeding granted dollars, providing technical assistance and coordinating education efforts, the Partnership is designed to use one-time investments for long-term returns of material. Key work elements are expected to include:

•    Access: Ensuring local programs are served by carts

•    Champion building: Educating local and state officials about the important connection between recycling, local jobs, and manufacturing

•    Regional coordination: Connecting the dots between the diverse players that are involved in paper and packaging recycling

•    Strong outreach and education: Getting more good recyclables into the bin.

SPI joins the Alcoa Foundation, American Chemistry Council, American Forest & Paper Association, the Association of Postconsumer Plastic Recyclers, Ball Corp., Carton Council, and Coca-Cola in supporting The Recycling Partnership.

The Curbside Value Partnership (CVP) is a 501(c)(3) organization designed to grow participation in curbside recycling programs nationwide.

Founded in 1937, SPI: The Plastics Industry Trade Association promotes growth in the $373 billion U.S. plastics industry. Representing nearly 900,000 American workers in the third largest U.S. manufacturing industry, SPI delivers legislative and regulatory advocacy, market research, industry promotion, and the fostering of business relationships and zero waste strategies. All profits from NPE are reinvested into SPI’s industry services.
