The maker of Biscoff brand cookies, Lotus Bakeries, is considering a site in Mebane, NC for a new Biscoff manufacturing site, the Lembeke, Belgium-based company announced this fall.

Responding to increasing sales of its famed carmelized cookie brand Lotus Biscoff in the United States – often seen on Delta Airlines flights – the company said it is seeking to support the growth with the construction of its first U.S.-based manufacturing site for the cookie. Construction is set to start in the first half of 2017 with an expected operational date some time in 2019, the company said.

“Having a Lotus Biscoff plant in the United States is a milestone for our company. For the first time since our foundation in 1932, Lotus Biscoff will be produced outside of Lembeke, Belgium. Lotus Bakeries and all its employees are extremely proud of this expansion in the world’s largest consumer market,” said the company’s chief executive officer, Jan Boone, in a statement.

The company is also building another manufacturing site in Belgium to help meet demand. Production of the cookie has been limited to Lembeke for 84 years. Lotus said conversations with local authorities in Mebane, NC are in a "well advanced stage."
