Multinational life science firm Lonza is starting to search for new chief executive officer as its current top executive, Marc Funk, prepares to step down from his position for “personal reasons,” the company announced Tuesday. The Board of Directors named chairman Albert Baehny as interim CEO while the hunt is on for a suitable replacement.

“The company has an exciting future in dynamic markets and I am keen to ensure that we maintain our momentum and capture all the opportunities available to us,” Baehny said in a statement. “I look forward to working with colleagues, customers, partners, and other stakeholders in the coming months and also to working with the board in the search for a new chief executive officer to lead the company in the years ahead.”

The company also announced that Christoph Maeder was promoted to lead independent director by its board.

“Albert has agreed to lead the company on a temporary basis until a successor is in place, for which a search has commenced,” Christoph Maeder, lead independent director at Lonza, said in a company press release. “The board respects Marc’s decision and would like to thank him for his service to Lonza and wish him well for his future endeavors.”

Funk is slated to remain in the CEO role until January 2020.
