A fire broke out in a piece of frying equipment at the Oxford Frozen Foods production plant in Oxford, NS on Tuesday evening, forcing workers to evacuate the facility, local news organizations reported. 

Crews responded to the facility at about 9 p.m. and worked for about two hours to put out the flames. 

“The only thing that appears to be damaged was the fryers where the fire seemed to have originated,” Oxford Fire Department Deputy Fire Chief Ken Hickman told the Amherst News. “The damage to the building itself was non-existent.”

Hickman said the fryer was used for onion rings. An alarm system activated a CO2 fire suppression equipment inside of the plant, the newspaper’s coverage said, containing most of the fire. 

Oxford Frozen Foods is the world’s biggest supplier of frozen wild blueberries and the largest processor of frozen carrot products in Canada, according to its website. The company also manufactures onion rings and battered vegetable appetizers, diced onion, and diced rutabaga. 

“If there would have been a lot more extensive damage in that new building, this time of year, it would have put 300 to 400 people, minimum, out of work,” Hickman said in an interview with CTV News Atlantic. 

No injuries were reported during the incident.
