A two-alarm fire broke out last Saturday night in the Barry Callebaut cocoa powders and cocoa liquor manufacturing plant in Eddystone, PA, several local news organizations reported. 

Crews were dispatched to the Industrial Highway facility after the blaze was reported at about 8:15 p.m., per coverage by CBS News affiliate in Philadelphia. Officials told the broadcaster that flames could be seen on the plant’s roof when firefighters got on scene. 

Firefighters worked for several hours to extinguish the two-alarm fire, FOX 29 Philadelphia said. During the incident, fire was mostly contained to a roasting room in the facility. No injuries were logged during the response.

Barry Callebaut announced plans in September 2019 to nearly double the size of its Eddystone plant. The company said the added space will help it to add lines for its domestically produced cocoa powder and butter products. 

A flash fire in cocoa-roasting equipment at Barry Callebaut’s Eddystone plant in January 2012 left two workers with burns, according to a Philadelphia Inquirer piece from the time. Eddystone Fire Capt. Allen Reeves told the newspaper that flames from the cocoa roasting equipment contacted combustible ground cocoa in a hopper.
