Cosmetics Firm Invests $27M to Expand U.S. Footprint

South Korean owned cosmetics and personal care products firm Seokoh Inc. recently revealed plans invest $27.9 million to expand its manufacturing presence in North America. The company plans to construct a new 200,000-sq-ft facility next to its existing manufacturing plant in Scott Township, PA, according to a September 20 press release issued by the office of Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf.

In addition to the new facility, the Kolmar Korea subsidiary said it also intends to renovate its current 70,000-sq-ft plant in Scott Township and acquire new equipment for the site. Both efforts are expected to create 280 new jobs.

“This expansion project is planned to be the location of the company’s North American headquarters, adding ‘beyond continents’ to ‘beyond science, beyond inside, beyond Kolmar’…for an ever changing and evolving Kolmar Korea,” Jason Lee, the director of Kolmar Korea’s North American Business Division, said in the release. “Seokoh and Kolmar Korea would like to thank Scott Township, Lakeland School District, and Lackawanna County as well as the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for their continued support.”

The company secured a funding proposal for a $126,000 workforce development grant for workforce training from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) and $480,000 in Job Creation Tax Credits. The company also may be eligible to receive a $7.25 million loan from the Pennsylvania Industrial Development Authority (PIDA).

“The beauty industry in the U.S. reached $18.8 billion in 2018, comprising of $13.7 billion in makeup and skin care product sales. Seokoh Inc. is a global leader in the cosmetics industry. Their investment within Scott Technology Park is a testament to the success that manufacturing companies are experiencing in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania,” said Bob Durkin, president of the Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce, in a statement. “We look forward to continued partnerships, working alongside the Seokoh team, as they grow their corporate campus, creating quality jobs, and investment in Scott Township.”

Founded in 2016 by Kolmar Korea, Seokoh is a contract manufacturer of personal care products and cosmetics.
