The AR 500 features Prehard 4140 shafting, an entire rotor vane made of AR 500, and a 3/8-in. wear plate made of AR 500 installed on cast iron end cap. ChromeOxide airlocks feature Prehard 4140 shafting, entire rotor vane made of AR 500, and .10-in. chrome oxide on wear surface of end cap. Mild steel vanes exposed on sides where AR strips do not cover, will wear first, being the area to experience blow by. A mild steel shaft is prone to excessive wear from products caught between the rotor and end cap leading to bearing and seal failure. Chrome plating is only .002 in. thick. Once gone, no protection on the cast iron housing and end caps will allow premature blow by.
