TSI Recognizes Roy A. Pickren, Jr. for More Than 50 Years of Service

The Sulfur Institute (TSI) continues to celebrate its 50th anniversary by recognizing Roy A. Pickren, Jr., president, Crescent Technology Inc., New Orleans, for more than 50 years of contribution to the sulfur industry.

In 1959, Pickren joined Freeport Minerals Inc. (later Freeport McMoRan Inc.) and was in Joliet, IL 50 years ago to oversee receipt of the first-ever liquid sulfur shipment. A few years later, he was aboard ship with the first trans-Atlantic liquid sulfur cargo to Europe.

“Needless to say, I have witnessed a lot of changes within the sulfur industry during my career,” Pickren said upon receipt of his certificate of appreciation from Herman Wittje, chair, TSI and director, raw materials, The Mosaic Co.

Catherine A. Randazzo, TSI president and CEO, stated, “Roy’s experience within the sulfur industry is impressive and we are thankful for his TSI service.”  Randazzo noted these Pickren experiences:

* served as president of Freeport Sulfur Co.
* was a part of a successful sulfur exploration program in the Sinai desert
* contributed to the engineering and construction of the massive offshore platform and facilities of the Main Pass 299 sulfur mine
* worked to construct and install a submerged combustion sulfur purification unit in Iraq
* and led a sulfur-driven venture designing and engineering for planned sulfur processing, terminal, and export facilities in southern Russia and the Ukraine.

Pickren’s recognition was the result of a polling of delegates registered for TSI’s Sulfur World Symposium 2010. His more than 50 years of service exceeded that of an additional 21 individuals honored for their numerous years of contribution to the industry. Pickren’s resume includes education at Georgia Institute of Technology, Louisiana State University, and the University of Virginia.

In 1993, Pickren co-founded Crescent Technology Inc. (www.cticonsult.com), which provides consulting services in engineering, environmental management, safety, and laboratory analyses to an international client base, including the sulfur industry.

Founded in 1960, TSI is committed to representing all stakeholders actively engaged in producing, buying, selling, handling, transporting, or adding value to sulfur on a global basis.
