Successful Chemical Security Program Receives Bipartisan Support in House Subcommittee

The Subcommittee on Environment & the Economy of the House Energy and Commerce Committee approved H.R. 908, the “Full Implementation of the Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Act” with bipartisan support.

In response to this important vote, American Chemistry Council (ACC) president & CEO Cal Dooley issued the following statement:

“Recent events serve as an important reminder that we must continue the work of securing our nation from potential threats. It’s clear from today’s vote that extending the Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS) is an important part of completing that work and ensuring that our nation will continue to benefit from the successful chemical security program already in place.

“We commend chairman John Shimkus along with Congressmen Gene Green and Tim Murphy for their leadership and thank the other members of the committee for their work to pass legislation that will help protect this vital sector of the nation’s infrastructure and economy.

“ACC and our members are committed to working with the members of the full committee along with the members of the House Homeland Security Committee and the Senate Committee on Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs, to enact legislation that will provide for a long-term extension of CFATS.”

Since 2001, ACC members have helped lead the way on chemical security, investing more than $8 billion on facility security enhancements under ACC’s Responsible Care Security Code, which has become a model for the industry and regulatory programs.
