SOCMA Names Larry Sloan President/CEO

The Society of Chemical Manufacturers and Affiliates (SOCMA) has announced the appointment of Lawrence D. Sloan as president and CEO, effective February 10, 2010. Sloan succeeds Joseph Acker, who will retire from SOCMA at the end of the month, after more than 16 years of combined service to the organization.

“Larry Sloan’s background as a chemical engineer, coupled with his extensive work in the non-profit sector and years in the chemical industry, make him an ideal choice for SOCMA,” said Board of Governors chairman Charles Hinnant. “We are confident that under his leadership, SOCMA will grow even stronger and secure greater victories in Washington for the batch, custom, and specialty chemical industry.”

Sloan previously served as president of the Adhesive and Sealant Council (ASC), a trade association representing the adhesive and sealant industry. He joined the Council in 2001 as director member services and was promoted to senior director before assuming the presidency in 2005. During his tenure, he has spearheaded many new projects, including the launch of Web-based training and a variety of initiatives designed to help grow the adhesives industry. Notable projects include the development and launch of a new Web site to educate product designers, engineers, architects, and college engineering students about the benefits and value of using adhesives and sealants in modern design and assembly. Additionally, he is credited with the creation of a new adhesive CAD symbol to facilitate the use of adhesives in engineering drawings.

“I have observed SOCMA’s many strengths as the leading voice of the batch, custom, and specialty chemical industry throughout the year, and am excited and eager to assume this position,” said Sloan. “I look forward to working with SOCMA member companies and professional staff members to strengthen and expand the organization in the years to come.”

A native of Philadelphia, Sloan started his career as a chemical engineer at Air Products & Chemicals in Allentown, PA and later worked for Nalco Chemical Co. in Naperville, IL in marketing, manufacturing, and sales. He entered the non-profit sector in 2000 as membership director for the Consumer Specialty Products Association, a trade group of companies in the chemically formulated products industry before joining ASC the following year.

Sloan graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. Later he returned to J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University where he received his Masters of Management and graduated with honors.
