SOCMA Announces Winners of 2010 Performance Improvement Awards

Article-SOCMA Announces Winners of 2010 Performance Improvement Awards

The Society of Chemical Manufacturers and Affiliates (SOCMA) has announced the winners of the 2010 Performance Improvement Awards, recognizing more than 25 member facilities for their outstanding commitment to continuous improvement in environmental, health, safety, and security (EHS&S) practices. Nearly 75 percent of eligible member companies competed for the top prize, the Gold Award, raising the standard of this year’s competition sponsored by SOCMA’s ChemStewards program.

Recipients earned awards in four categories – Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Educational Outreach Award – and will be recognized during SOCMA’s Annual Dinner on December 6 in New York.

The 2010 Gold Performance Improvement Award will be given to three facilities: Baker Hughes’ Rayne, LA and Sands Springs, OK, facilities and Synthetech’s plant in Albany, OR, for exceptional and aggressive performance improvement in all five of the core principles of ChemStewards.

"We commend all of this year’s winners for their hard work and look forward to recognizing their achievements in New York next week," said SOCMA president and CEO Lawrence D. Sloan.

"The continued increase in the number of applicants, coupled with the level of achievements presented by members, speaks to the growing success of SOCMA’s ChemStewards program which is now in its fifth year," continued Sloan.

Sloan added that 40 percent of applicants also voluntarily provided information on their activities in the areas of green and sustainable chemistry. SOCMA is working to integrate a "green metric" into the ChemStewards program, which it plans to roll out next year.

A total of 17 Silver Awards will be presented to facilities showing excellence in their efforts towards one of the five ChemStewards Core Principles: Stakeholder Communications, Product Stewardship, EHS&S in Planning and Operations, Employee Training and Engagement, and Resource Management and Waste Minimization.

Additionally, 10 SOCMA member facilities will be awarded with the Bronze Performance Improvement Award, which goes to facilities maintaining strong EHS&S programs. SOCMA will also honor ChemDesign Products and McGean with the association’s Educational Outreach Award, which is sponsored by the Chemical Educational Foundation. Both companies made exemplary efforts in expanding their school and community outreach efforts.
