New White Paper Touts Benefits of SOCMA's Chemstewards Program

In accordance with the fifth anniversary of the ChemStewards program, the Society of Chemical Manufacturers and Affiliates (SOCMA) announced the publication of a white paper that highlights the program’s effectiveness, compares it to other leading management systems, and addresses some public misconceptions.

“The key advantage to ChemStewards is its adaptability and recognition of the diversity of the batch, custom, and specialty chemical industry,” said program director J. Holland Jordan, PhD. “This document underscores the value of the ChemStewards model and provides key statistics for those who are misinformed about the details of the program, such as the third-party auditing system.”

Jordan says today’s performance improvement programs have many similarities but some obvious differences as well, as outlined in the white paper. A comparison table illustrates how ChemStewards differs from other programs in the areas of system documentation, support materials, and association assistance, to name a few.

“The white paper demonstrates how ChemStewards meets the diverse requirements of our industry and provides a comprehensive framework for improving environmental, health, safety, and security (EHS&S) performance,” said David Chatfield, an expert with more than 20 years experience advising chemical companies in EHS&S.

The white paper also examines the history of process improvement in the chemical industry over the past two decades and discusses the various industry and government programs designed to aid in the safety of the chemical process.

The paper is the result of a year-long collaboration between SOCMA members, staff, and professional auditors who have extensive knowledge in this arena. It is intended to assist regulatory bodies, such as the Environmental Protection Agency and the Occupational Health and Safety Administration, as well as prospective SOCMA members and other key influencers in understanding the ChemStewards program.
