Honeywell Process Solutions Receives Green Excellence of the Year Award

Based on its recent analysis of the process automation industry, Frost & Sullivan has recognized Honeywell Process Solutions (HPS) with the 2008 North American Frost & Sullivan Green Excellence of the Year Award. Through its automation solutions, Honeywell has helped process manufacturers use energy more efficiently, improve environmental compliance, decrease emissions, and enhance overall business performance.

“Honeywell’s solution suite, which includes the Experion Process Knowledge System (PKS), Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), Profit Suite (advanced process control solution), and UniSim (simulation lifecycle management solution), provides an unparalleled value addition for achieving energy efficiency and sustainability,” says Frost & Sullivan research analyst Arunkumar J. “Honeywell’s customer-first approach has aided the development and integration of energy-efficient solutions.”

For customers that are reluctant to overhaul their legacy systems, Honeywell’s flagship product, Experion, offers the ability to leverage investments in existing legacy systems while simultaneously benefiting from state-of-the-art advanced lifecycle solutions.

Honeywell consistently aims to boost plant performance through better design, development of operations simulation, and plant optimization. Its UniSim solution enables customers to innovate through dynamic design models, operator training, performance monitoring, troubleshooting, production management, and asset management tools.

UniSim also addresses the issue of technical talent shortages in the process industries of both developed and emerging markets. Since effective training and utilization of manpower is crucial due to the limited availability of human resources, UniSim’s training tools are in demand for their ability to provide operators with much needed process and operations training, resulting in higher operational efficiencies and reduced downtime.

Honeywell’s solutions gain special significance when considering increasing crude prices and depleting oil and gas resources that have been challenging refineries to maintain their refining margins while reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The refineries increasingly turn to sophisticated technology and the concept of “green chemistry,” wherein the whole oil refining process is re-engineered to ensure sustainability.

By incorporating UOP’s expertise in process knowledge into its UniSim family of process modeling and simulation technology, Honeywell enables refineries and petrochemical manufacturers to create a realistic simulation environment for designing and testing processes before they are implemented in their plants. It also enables training operators to use those processes and reduce errors that could lead to plant incidents. The results include safer and more efficient operation and less unplanned downtime.

“Honeywell’s Profit Suite applications provide multi-variable predictive control and optimization solutions that enable customers across a wide variety of process industries to operate their plants more efficiently,” notes Arunkumar. “The ability to consistently run the plant against operating limits while preventing it from violating any constraints, including environmental, helps improve productivity and lower energy costs.”

Another method to achieve greater energy efficiency and cost savings is the deployment of wireless technologies. Honeywell’s OneWireless solution is ahead of the competition in terms of scalability, security, and reduced energy consumption. The popularity of this solution is indicated by Honeywell’s leading position in the wireless sensors and transmitters space.

While providing solutions that enable customers to practice sustainability, Honeywell also follows green practices internally. Honeywell has set a five-year target of a 30% reduction in GHG in its facilities by increasing energy efficiency by 24%. It is going about this task by investing heavily in certification and manufacturing best practices.

“Honeywell channels a significant percentage of its yearly R&D budget toward developing solutions that enable customers to attain energy efficiency and reduce GHG emissions,” observes Arunkumar. “Its concerted efforts to provide suites of process automation solutions, as well as the lifecycle services that assess and maintain the customers’ process control systems, have promoted significant sales growth.”

Each year Frost & Sullivan presents this award to the company that has demonstrated a concerted initiative towards envisioning and implementing a strategic framework for institutions, communities, and nations at a global level to adopt sustainable and environmentally-conscious practices. This award signifies the company's inclination to establish a conscientious momentum among policy makers, organizations, and advocates of green awareness worldwide to arrive at results-oriented environmental management objectives, documented systems, and implementation guidelines to reduce ecological footprint in the habitat.

Frost & Sullivan’s Best Practices Awards recognize companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service, and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis, and extensive secondary research in order to identify best practices in the industry.
