The International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA) board of directors has elected Andrew Liveris, chairman and chief executive officer of The Dow Chemical Company, and Cal Dooley, president and chief executive officer of the American Chemistry Council (ACC), as ICCA president and secretary, respectively. Both officers will serve a two-year term starting on January 1, 2011.

“I am honored to serve as the ICCA president,” said Liveris. “During the next two years ICCA will expand crucial programs such as Responsible Care and the Global Product Strategy and be an instrument of action on an international basis. We look forward to extending our advocacy in several emerging economies including China, India, and Africa. 2011 is also the International Year of Chemistry, a unique occasion for everyone to celebrate the benefits chemistry provides to society.”

Solvay CEO Christian Jourquin, outgoing president of the ICCA and the European Chemical Industry Council (Cefic) said, “The past two years have seen the growth of ICCA and our efforts to promote product stewardship and effective chemicals management.”

Highlighting recent achievements of ICCA, Jourquin noted the recent agreement granting the relevant Chinese chemical industry associations “observer status” in ICCA. In addition, this month ICCA welcomed The Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association as the 54th member of the ICCA Responsible Care Leadership Group. The council also recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the United Nations Environment Programme, which formalizes ICCA’s partnership to continue progress on the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM), Responsible Care, and the Global Product Strategy.

Looking ahead, Cal Dooley said, “I look forward to working with our colleagues in all nations as we continue to demonstrate that our products are safe for their intended uses and that we take seriously our commitment to product stewardship.”

Hubert Mandery, Cefic director general and outgoing ICCA Council secretary concluded, “There were a lot of groundbreaking achievements during the last two years. A great success that forms the basis for future work is our carbon life cycle analysis, conducted in cooperation with McKinsey, with which we evaluated the impact of our industry operations and which demonstrated the overall benefits of chemistry in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”
