Chem Show Educational Series Includes Solids Processing Track

Addressing the critical challenges facing CPI professionals will be the focus of the educational programming during the two-day Engineering Series at the 2009 Chem Show. These four valuable tracks will offer sessions on Solids Processing, Automation & Control, Cost-Effective Conservation, and Career.

Solids Processing
a. Blending and Segregation and Their Effects on Product Quality: This key topic will highlight the mechanisms of blending and segregation and how they can be used to analyze particle segregation problems and determine ways to eliminate such problems. (Wednesday, November 18, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.)

b. Selection of Screws, Belts, and Rotary Valve Feeders for Reliable Flow and Rate Control: This topic is important to the CPI because methods are available to minimize, if not eliminate, process irregularities caused by improper design of volumetric and gravimetric bulk solids feeders. (Wednesday, November 18, 1:00-3:00 p.m.)

c. Preventing Bulk Solids Caking and Particle Attrition: Powder caking, whether raw material in bags or drums, or during storage of in-process material, is a major cause of problems. This session will discuss a novel approach that utilizes both micro and macro properties of powders to identify the causes of caking and develop solutions. (Thursday, November 19, 9:00-11:00 a.m.)

2. Automation & Control
a. Wireless and Asset Management - Small Investments, Quick Returns: This track will help attendees identify the low-hanging fruit in their plants that are ripe for improvement. The focus will be on integrated solutions, such as wireless and asset management, that quickly lower total operational and lifecycle costs without the requirement for huge, upfront investments. (Wednesday, November 18, 9:00-11:30 a.m.)

3. Career
a. How to Find and Secure the Best Job: Whether you are one of the many chemical engineers who have been downsized in the recent economic crisis or you find yourself in the job market for other reasons, this course is designed to help you position yourself for the best possible job opportunities and includes the do’s and don’ts in today’s job market. (Wednesday, November 18, 2:00-5:00 p.m.)

4. Cost-Effective Conservation
a. Biomass Energy - Practical and Cost-Effective Applications in the CPI: For the chemical process industries, biomass and alternate fuels offer cleaner, renewable ways to produce energy, greatly reduce operating costs, and are considered carbon neutral. Wood-based and agricultural biomass fuels are becoming a common source of energy for CPI Plants. (Thursday, November 19, 8:45-9:45 a.m.)

b. Water Treatment and Reuse: As world water needs are growing, a very important consideration is water reuse. Regardless of the water source — rainwater, storm water, municipal sewage, or manufacturing/processing wastewater — technologies are available to collect, treat, and reuse this water for virtually any application, including potable uses. This workshop will investigate these sources of water, address the quality characteristics of each, and detail the treatment technologies appropriate for the range of treated water uses. (Thursday, November 19, 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.)

“This year’s expanded conference program includes everything from the ‘broad-in-scope’ to industry specific topics that are timely and important to CPI professionals,” said Clay Stevens, president of International Exposition Co. (IEC), which produces The Chem Show. “The technical content and topics keep CPI professionals on the cutting edge of industry developments and focused on the critical challenges.”
