Man Dies in Grain Storage Bin

Leon Madey, a 73-year-old farmer died Monday after becoming trapped in a grain bin in Genoa, IL, according to the DeKalb County the coroner’s office.

According to reports, Madey had been loading a truck with his son and entered the silo in an attempt to clear a crust (a hard top that forms on the corn pile that can leave a cavity beneath it, reducing the bin’s capacity. Firefighters from multiple departments cut holes in the bin to help empty in. It is believed that Madey fell through the pile. He was found standing upright in the corn.

It is estimated that more than 10,000 bushels of corn were inside the storage bin.

Madey is survived by a wife and four children.
