Sieve Terminology Standard Revised by ASTM Particle and Spray Characterization Committee

A newly revised ASTM terminology standard reflects the latest technological advances in particle size analysis (standard test sieves) and particle separation (screening media).

ASTM E1638, Terminology Relating to Sieves, Sieving Methods and Screening Media, was developed by Subcommittee E29.01 on Sieves, Sieving Methods and Screening Media, part of ASTM International Committee E29 on Particle and Spray Characterization.

Terms in ASTM E1638 are related to the manufacture of standard test sieves and screening media as well as terms related to the methods, analysis, procedures, and equipment for sizing and separating particles.

Kenneth Beyer, president, Unique Wire Weaving Co., and an E29 member representing the American Wire Cloth Institute, notes that E29.01 has been very active in recent years, both in revising existing standards to reflect current technology and in developing new standards such as E2814, Guide for Industrial Woven Wire Filter Cloth.

“In 2006, due to both new and revised standards activity within E29.01, it was decided to revise E1638 to incorporate all terms in E29.01 standards,” says Beyer. “Thus, ASTM E1638 is our master document, allowing a user to reference one document for all sieving and screening media definitions.”

All interested parties are invited to join in the standards developing activities of E29.01.
