Swiss food and beverage giant Nestle announced a new partnership with the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) on Thursday to provide the health organization support as its responds to the novel coronavirus pandemic. 

“The COVID-19 pandemic is a global problem and consequently we are offering help on the ground everywhere, drawing on our extensive presence and experience in 187 countries,” Nestle Chief Executive Officer Mark Schneider said in a statement. “In addition, we give our full support to those who are fighting tirelessly against the spread of the virus, every day. This is where our trusted and longstanding partnership with the IFRC comes in.”

Among the ways the company will provide support to emergency services and caregivers and help bolster healthcare systems, Nestle said it plans to donate food, medical nutrition products, and bottled water to people impacted by the coronavirus, use its out-of-home business to help IFRC efforts in several countries, and donate CHF 10 million to the organization for deployments in countries that are severely impacted. The company also said it will match its employees’ donations to the organization. 

“We applaud the relentless efforts of the millions of Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers and admire their determination to make a difference on the ground,” said Schneider. 

Beyond the support to IFRC, the company said it is working to ensure that it can continue to meet global demand for its products. Nestle put “enhanced safety procedures” into place at its factories and other facilities, according to the release, and expanded the availability of sick time.
