As new and advanced production operations involving bulk solids continue to grow and evolve, architects and construction firms sometimes face challenges when it comes to designing production facilities that meet building and fire code requirements. Unlike other hazardous materials listed in Table 5003.1.1(1) of the International Fire Code or Table 60.4.2.1.1.3 of NFPA 1 that have a Maximum Allowable Quantity (MACQ), combustible dusts do not. As a result, designers, builders, and AHJs are all faced with the unique challenge of determining if combustible dust hazards are properly mitigated before determining the occupancy classification.

In this presentation, participants will learn how to navigate the MAQ tables in both the IFC and NFPA 1 for combustible particulate solids and how a comprehensive Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA) can impact Occupancy Classification.
