Dole plc experienced a cyberattack that has been identified as ransomware.
As soon as the produce manufacturer realized the incident, the company moved quickly to contain the threat and engaged leading third-party cybersecurity experts, who have been working in partnership with Dole’s internal teams to remediate the issue and secure systems.
Ransomware is malware designed to deny a user or organization access to files on their computer. By encrypting these files and demanding a ransom payment for access, the user or organization is in a tough spot. Cybercriminals want the form of payment, or "ransom," before unlocking files.
Dole has notified law enforcement about the incident and are cooperating with their investigation.
While continuing to investigate the scope of the incident, the impact to Dole operations has been limited. However, CNN reported that the attack temporarily shut down North American production.
Dole operates globally out of 162 distribution and manufacturing hubs, 75 packhouses, 12 cold storage facilities, 5 salad processing plants, 13 ships, and 109 owned acres of production.
