The US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service recalled two products, expanded one, and issued one health alert in the month of November. This is lower than October, which had two recalls, one expanded recall, and two public health alerts. Yet the numbers are just over September, which had two recalls and zero health alerts.

Possible Listeria Contamination

  • Yu Shang Food Inc., Spartanburg, SC, has recalled about 72,240 lb of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products due to the potential of Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The first recall notice was on November 21, with the expansion on November 25. FSIS and CDC, along with state health officials, are investigating a multi-state outbreak linked to the products. The problem was discovered after FSIS performed routine testing and follow-up activities of finished product produced by Yu Shang Food on Oct. 21, 2024, that confirmed the product was positive for Listeria monocytogenes. Additional testing has confirmed that Listeria monocytogenes was detected in product and in environmental samples collected by FSIS. Products subject to recall have establishment number “P-46684” or “EST. M46684” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to retail locations nationwide and available for purchase online. Impacted products include:

Possible E. coli Contamination

  • Wolverine Packing Co., Detroit, MI, is recalling approximately 167,277 lb of ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. The fresh products have a “use by” date of 11/14/2024 and the frozen products are labeled with production date 10 22 24. The products subject to recall have establishment number “EST. 2574B” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The items were shipped to restaurant locations nationwide.  FSIS was notified by the Minnesota Dept. of Agriculture of a group of ill people who had reported that they consumed ground beef prior to their illness. The ground beef was sold to restaurants and FSIS said that some establishments still have it in refrigerators or freezers. FSIS was notified of illnesses on Nov. 13, 2024, and working in conjunction with Minnesota Departments of Agriculture and Health, the agency found a link between the ground beef products from Wolverine Packing Co. and this illness cluster. Here is the full list of Wolverine Packing Co. recalled ground beef.

Public Health Alert

  • A public health alert was issued for INCA beef tallow products that were illegally imported from Mexico and are ineligible for entry into the US. The product affected is 1-kg or 500-g bag packages containing “INCA GRASA COMESTIBLE DE SEBO BOVINO” (edible fat from beef tallow). The products were not certified for export to the US by the government of Mexico as being produced under equivalent inspection, they do not identify a certified establishment number on their packaging, and they were not presented to FSIS for import reinspection as required. MEXDIS LLC, a distributor importing food from Mexico, is the contact regarding this recall. There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.
