During the month of June, there were three recalls and three public health alerts issued by the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). This is triple the amount of each, as May only had one recall and one health alert.

Of the three recalls, one was due to being imported without benefit of import reinspection, and the two others were due to misbranding and undeclared allergens.  

Misbranding / Undeclared Allergens

  • Bonneval Foods, Gonzales, LA, recalled approximately 45 lb of barbecue pork skin product. The product contains wheat and soy, known allergens, that are not declared on the product label. 1.7-oz. plastic bags containing “Bonneval’s BBQ Pork Skins.” All products available in retail or in consumers’ pantries is included in this recall. The product has establishment number “EST. 2249” inside the USDA mark of inspection. This pork products were distributed to retail locations in Louisiana and Mississippi.  

  • M.G. Waldbaum dba Michael Foods Inc., Gaylord, MN, is recalling approximately 4,620 lb of liquid egg products. The product contains dairy (milk), a known allergen, which is not declared on the product label. The liquid egg breakfast blend formulation items were produced June 11, 2024. The products subject to recall are: 32-oz. paperboard carton containing “Fair Meadow Foundations Whole Eggs with Citric Acid” with the use by date of “16 SEP 24” and lot code 4162G. This product is packaged within a corrugated case labeled Scrambled Egg Blend with the same use by date and lot code.

  • The FSIS issued a public health alert for product labeled as bao Thai-style curry chicken by Brett Anthony Foods of Elk Grove Village, IL. The product labeled as bao curry chicken may actually contain teriyaki chicken bao products, which contain soy and sesame, known allergens, which are not declared on the product label. FSIS is issuing this public health alert to ensure that consumers with allergies to soy and sesame are aware that this product should not be consumed. A recall was not requested because the affected product is no longer available for purchase. The fully cooked, frozen bao curry chicken product was packaged on March 20, 2024. The following product is subject to the public health alert10-oz. boxes containing four “WOW BAO Bao Thai-Style Curry Chicken” with “best if used by” date “4/12/25” printed on the side of the box. The product bears establishment number “P-40001” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to Walmart retail locations nationwide.     

  • FSIS issued another public health alert for a salad product labeled as Bistro Grande Southwestern Style with Chicken. The salad product labeled as Southwestern Style with Chicken may actually contain Chicken Caesar Salad containing wheat and fish (anchovies), known allergens, which are not declared on the product label. FSIS is issuing this public health alert to ensure that consumers with allergies to wheat and fish are aware that this product should not be consumed. A recall was not requested because the affected product is no longer available for purchase. The salad bowls were packaged on May 28, 2024. These products are under the alert: 11.75-oz. bowls containing “Bistro Grande Southwestern Style with Chicken with Salsa Ranch Dressing” with use by date “JUN 12 2024,” time stamp “08:59,” lot code “217638176,” and establishment number “P-27497” on the label. These items were shipped to retail locations in California and Nevada.   

Without the Benefit of Import Reinspection

  • South American Meat Inc., aka 5Gogi LLC, an importer located in Commerce, CA, is recalling approximately 20,111 lb of various eligible frozen raw beef products that were not presented to FSIS for import reinspection upon entry into the US. Recalled products include: The various frozen raw beef items were imported from Uruguay on or around March 17, 2024. The following products are subject to recall:

The products subject to recall bear Uruguay establishment number “58” printed inside the Uruguay inspection mark located on the shipping box and vacuum sealed product packaging. These items were shipped to distributors, restaurants, retailers, and institutions in Arizona, California, Oregon, and Washington.                   

Sodium Nitrite Levels in Excess of Regulatory Limit

  • The FSIS issued a public health alert for Farmstead Butcher Block (Central City, KY) not-ready-to-eat pork and beef bacon products due to levels of sodium nitrite that exceed the regulatory limit. FSIS is issuing this public health alert to ensure that consumers are aware that this product should not be consumed. A recall was not requested because the affected product is no longer available for purchase. The dry cured pork and beef bacon items were produced between April 12, 2024, and May 31, 2024. The following products are subject to the public health alert:

Some of products subject to the public health alert bear establishment number “EST. 47852” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to farmers markets and farm stores in Kentucky and Tennessee as well as direct-to-consumer sales. The other items sold by various weight were purchased from the retail counter at Farmstead Butcher Block. Other products were produced under a custom exemption and do not bear the USDA mark of inspection.
