There were 4 product health alerts or recalls by the USDA’s Food Safety & Inspection Service in the month of January, which is down from December with 7.

Out of the two recalls, one was due to possible Salmonella contamination, and one for possible foreign matter inclusion. Two health alerts were issued: one for misbranding/undeclared allergen, and one for not having the benefit of inspection.

Possible Salmonella Contamination

  • Fratelli Beretta USA, Mount Olive, NJ, is recalling approximately 11,097 lb of Busseto Foods brand ready-to-eat charcuterie meat products that may be contaminated with Salmonella. The ready-to-eat (RTE) charcuterie sampler product was produced on October 30, 2023. The product affected is: 18-oz. plastic tray packages containing “Busseto Foods Charcuterie Sampler Prosciutto, Sweet Sopressata, and Dry Coppa” with lot code L075330300 and Best if Used By APR 27, 2024. The products are sold as a twin pack with two 9-oz. packages. The items were shipped to Sam’s Club distribution centers in Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Texas. FDA also issued a health alert for Fratelli Beretta brand Antipasto Gran Beretta. Products were sold at Costco in a 24-oz. twin-pack (two 12-oz. trays). Any lot code associated with either product is potentially contaminated. The products are no longer available for purchase at Costco and Sam's Club.

Possible Foreign Matter Inclusion

  • Salm Partners, Denmark, WI, is recalling approximately 133,039 lb of ready-to-eat turkey kielbasa products that may be contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically bone fragments. The ready-to-eat turkey kielbasa items were produced on October 27, 2023, and October 30, 2023. The following products are subject to recall: 13-oz. plastic vacuum-sealed packages containing “Parkview Turkey Polska Kielbasa,” with P-32009 and Use By Date of APR 24 24” or Use By Date of APR 27 24 printed on the package. Both the company and FSIS have received consumer complaints. One was a minor oral injury from consuming the product.

Without Benefit of Inspection

  • Dim Sum Factory Inc., Flushing, NY, produced and distributed raw, frozen pork dumpling products without the benefit of federal inspection. A recall was not requested because the products are no longer available for purchase. A public health alert was issued for the product: 1.5-lb. vacuum-packed packages containing "Gogo Dumpling Pork & Shepherd's Purse Wontons (Handmade)." The raw, frozen pork wonton dumpling products were produced on various dates since Sept. 6, 2023, and have a shelf life of 18 months.

Misbranding/Undeclared Allergen

  • A public health alert for frozen mushroom risotto products due to misbranding and an undeclared allergen. The product labeled as porcini mushroom risotto bites may actually contain hot dogs in puff pastry, which contain sesame, a known allergen, that is not declared on the product label. The frozen Porcini Mushroom Risotto Bites were produced April 11, 2023. The affected product is: 7.5-oz. cardboard packages containing “Wild Fork Porcini Mushroom Risotto Bites” with lot code 101231, Best by date of 10/11/2024, and EST. 39896 on the side of the box.
