One raw/frozen cat food was recalled and a dog food brand pulled products from shelves at the end of December.

On December 24, 2024, Northwest Naturals issued a voluntary recall on one cat food recipe due to bird flu contamination. As well, Open Farms issued a recall on various dog foods for the possibility of plastic particles in the product.

Northwest Naturals, headquartered in Portland, OR, voluntarily recalled one batch of Northwest Naturals brand 2 lb Feline Turkey Recipe raw frozen pet food after it tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus.

The recalled product is packaged in 2-pound plastic bags with “Best if used by” dates of 05/21/26 B10 and 06/23/2026 B1. The product was sold through distributors in AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, IL, MD, MI, MN, PA, RI and WA in the United States, and British Columbia in Canada.

This recall is being conducted in cooperation with the Oregon Department of Agriculture, Salem, OR.

Consumption of raw or uncooked pet food contaminated with HPAI can cause illness in animals. To date, one case of illness in a domestic cat has been reported in connection with this issue.

On December 23, 2024, Ontario, CAN-based Open Farm announced a voluntary removal of select lots of five Freeze-Dried Raw Morsel Recipes for dogs and Front Range Ancient Grains RawMix Recipe for dogs due to the limited presence of small pieces of soft plastic film. This is not a recall, the company stated.
