K-State Offering Pneumatic Conveying, Storage & Flow Courses

Kansas State University is offering two courses: “Pneumatic Conveying of Powders and Bulk Solids” and “Storage and Flow of Bulk Solids.”

“Pneumatic Conveying of Powders and Bulk Solids” will take place October 11-14, 2016. This course focuses on the design of pneumatic conveying systems, common pneumatic conveying problems and discusses solutions to these problems. Participants will participate in the actual design of pneumatic conveying system following step-by-step procedure. The course includes practical demonstrations and troubleshooting using various materials in actual pneumatic conveying systems.

Those responsible for designing, improving, or troubleshooting pneumatic conveying systems, such as engineers, operators, managers, technicians, and R&D scientists and engineers are encouraged to attend. The course is appropriate for new employees as well as those who want to increase their knowledge and experience. Employees in the following industries are encouraged to attend: pharmaceuticals, plastics, chemicals, minerals, food, grain and feed.

By attending the course, participants will be able to:
* Design a pneumatic conveying system and select equipment
* Troubleshoot pneumatic conveying problems
* Understand the material properties related to pneumatic conveying
* Understand the different types of pneumatic conveying systems and their applications, advantages and disadvantages

Course Instructors:
* Cory Downing, Vortex Valves
* Dr. Johnselvakumar Lawrence, Kansas State University
* Dr. Gary Liu, DuPont
* Pat Mahoney, Coperion K-Tron
* Steve Reed, Kasa Industrial Controls

The cost of the course is $1500. Register online at: bulksolids.k-state.edu/profdev

“Storage and Flow of Bulk Solids” will be held November 8-10, 2016. This course covers important topics related to powder and bulk solid flow in bins, hoppers, and chutes. Participants will participate in a full-scale test laboratory practical session on bulk solids handling.

Those responsible for designing, improving, or troubleshooting powder and bulk solids handling systems, such as engineers, operators, managers, technicians, and R&D scientists and engineers are encouraged to attend. The course is appropriate for new employees as well as those who want to increase their knowledge and experience. Employees in the following industries are encouraged to attend: pharmaceuticals, plastics, chemicals, minerals, food, grain and feed.

By attending the course, participants will be able to:
* Understand flow properties and problems for powders and bulk solids
* Design a bin/hopper, chute, and feeder
* Implement trouble shooting procedures related to flow problems
* Utilize DEM (Discrete Element Method) to study flow problems

Course Instructors:
* Dr. Richard Farnish, Wolfson, UK has over 25 years experience in bulk solids and teaches the science of and technologies for handling powders and granular materials.
* Dr. Carl Wassgren, Purdue
* Dr. Johnselvakumar Lawrence, Kansas State University
