The Sustainable Solutions business of petrochemical firm Indorama Ventures is committing $11 million to expand its facility in Athens, AL, according to a release issued Monday by the Limestone County Economic Development Association. 100,000 sq ft of space will be added to the plastic bottle recycling plant’s existing footprint.

Athens City Council officials approved an amended tax abatement related to the project this week. Indorama’s latest investment is expected to create 18 new jobs at the plant.

“Indorama Ventures Sustainable Solutions looks forward to expanding our operations in Limestone County,” plant manager Byron Geiger said in a statement. “I have lived in this county for the past 12 years and the pro-business atmosphere has a huge impact on our decision on expanding operations here in Limestone County.”

The addition is expected to become operational next year. In 2019, the city of Athens approved a 10-year tax abatement for the plant after the company announced a $40 million expansion project at the site, CBS News affiliate WHNT reported.
