German specialty chemicals and materials firm Evonik is expanding its foothold in the additive manufacturing space with the opening of a new technology center for 3D printing in Austin, TX, a recent company press release announced.

“The new Technology Center continues the success story of Structured Polymers under the umbrella of Evonik. We have now created the necessary framework to establish this advanced technology for the production of 3D printable polymer powders on the market,” Thomas Grosse-Puppendahl, head of the Additive Manufacturing Innovation Growth Field at Evonik, said in a statement.

The Center for Structured Polymers Technology will develop new materials using Structured Polymers technology for powder bed fusion additive manufacturing. Evonik’s new facility includes an application technology lab with 3D printers and a processing area, a R&D lab, production rooms, office space, and meeting rooms. Modern air extraction systems were installed at the Austin facility to comply with workplace ergonomics standards and safety standards.

“By expanding our capabilities in North America, we are sending an important signal to our partners in the region that we can now better support them with new technological opportunities in materials development right in their own backyard,” said Vikram Devarajan, managing director of the 3D Printing Technology Center in Austin, in the release.

Structured Polymers, a startup 3D printing materials firm, was acquired by Evonik in January 2019. The deal provided the German company with access to a patented technology for producing special polymer powders. Following the transaction, Structured Polymers released two thermoplastic elastomers for powder-based 3D printers.
