A worker died Tuesday night at the Dow Canada Prentiss polyethylene production plant near Red Deer, AB in a machinery-related incident, local news organizations reported.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a colleague, and we are working closely with all parties involved to gather more information and learn from this tragic incident,” Dow Canada said in a statementpublished in Twitter.

An investigation into the death has been opened by Alberta Occupational Safety and Health (OSH). Officials from the agency told media that the worker was crushed by hydraulics while working with a barrel dumper.

The site in Red Deer contains a polyethelene facility operated by Dow and two ethylene glycol production plants run by MEGlobal, a firm owned by EQUATE Petrochemical Company K.S.C., according to information on Dow Canada’s website. About 120 workers are employed at the site.
