Defense technology manufacturer Raytheon recently revealed plans to erect a new, 200,000-sq-ft factory at its Space and Airborne Systems headquarters in McKinney, TX. Slated to reach completion in late 2020, the new plant will create 500 new jobs, the company said in an August 22 press release.

The McKinney site focuses on intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance systems, and features a variety of capabilities including electro-optical manufacturing and high-energy laser systems.

“Not only is Raytheon’s work in intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance systems critical to the defense and national security of our country, its investment in our community helps drive our economy,” U.S. Representative Van Taylor of Texas said in a statement. “Today’s groundbreaking foreshadows Raytheon’s continued innovation in space and airborne systems as well as its growing presence as a job creator here in McKinney.”

Research from The University of North Texas Economic Research Group found that Raytheon’s operations in North Texas generate $4.8 billion in the state’s economy. Over 3000 workers are currently employed by Raytheon in McKinney.

“This is an investment in the talented McKinney workforce,” Roy Azevedo, president of Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems, said in the release. “It shows we are serious about our presence in Texas and that we are here to stay.”
