Beef and pork processor JBS USA said Tuesday that it recently entered into an agreement with protein manufacturing, freight logistics, and distribution firm J&B Group to purchase its value-added meat processing plant in Pipestone, MN.

If the deal proceeds, JBS will acquire the facility in the coming months. J&B Group had slated the site for closure. Under the terms of the deal, 130 workers currently employed at the Pipestone site will join JBS.

“We have worked with the J&B team under the common goals of preserving jobs and creating a sustainable future for the facility. We believe the facility’s infrastructure and accomplished workforce present a great opportunity to expand our ability to provide high-quality products to both domestic and export markets,” Bob Krebs, COO of UBS USA Pork, said in a company press release. “We plan on investing in the facility and growing the business, allowing our new team members and the local community to grow with us.”

J&B announced plans to sell the Pipestone plant on Sept. 18, 2019 and move production to another facility in St. Michael, MN.

This October, JBS said it will invest $20 million to add six new production lines and a new smokehouse at its Ottumwa, IA bacon plant. The company also announced plans in June for a $95 million project to expand its Grand Island, NE beef plant.
