American agricultural products firm J.R. Simplot Company plans to invest in the expansion of its Portage la Prairie, MB processing plant, the company and the government of Manitoba announced in a press release Wednesday.
J.R. Simplot’s investment of CAD$460 million, or about $367 million, will grow the size of the facility from 180,000 sq ft to 460,000 sq ft and create 87 new full-time jobs. After the expansion of the facility’s footprint is completed, the company will work to boost the site’s processing capabilities.
“Manitoba delivers in so many ways that will help make this project a success,” Mark McKellar, Simplot food group president, said in a statement. “It has access to quality potatoes, a strong grower community, availability of highly skilled employees and distribution routes that continue to expand our footprint.”
Completion is expected in the fall of 2019.
