INEOS Nitriles and Nouryon to Open New Chelates Plant

Chemical firms Nouryon and INEOS Nitriles are teaming up to open a new production facility for biodegradable chelates at a site operated by INEOS in Köln, Germany. The companies announced that they broke ground on the project in a release this Wednesday.

“This long term agreement with INEOS will support the growth of customer demand for readily biodegradable chelates in home and personal care applications such as detergents, which are a key strategic market for us,” Larry Ryan, executive vice president and president of Performance Formulations and the Americas for Nouryon, said in a statement.

The project stems from increased demand for chelates used in consumer automatic dishwasher detergents after lawmakers in Europe passed laws banning the use of phosphates in the products.

“Our relationship with Nouryon over the past years has proven to be mutually beneficial,” INEOS Chief Executive Officer Hans Casier stated. “We look forward to building on that success, and we are proud that the products developed through this expansion in our partnership will lead to a more sustainable industry.”

Under the arrangement, INEOS will operate and maintain the new assets in Köln. Chelates produced at the site will be sold in North America, Asia, and Europe.

“This capacity expansion underlines the company’s strategy of investing in attractive growth markets and its commitment to sustainable growth platforms,” Nouryon CEO Charlie Shaver said in the release. “It will enable us to better support the future growth plans of our customers. They will benefit from our continued efforts to improve global supply chain performance and optimization, and the ability to produce more sustainable products.”

The release did not offer details on when the new facilities are scheduled to open.

In January, INEOS Styrolution revealed plans to start work this year on a new ABS production facility in Ningbo, China next to a polystyrene plant it recently purchased. The site, located in the Zhejiang Province in the eastern portion of the country, will have an annual capacity of 600,000 tn. Work on the site is slated to begin this year and reach completion in 2023.
