Responding to an increase in demand for plastics across southeast Asia, Vietnamese firm Phu My Plastics Production JSC recently selected Honeywell UOP to supply and secure licensing for propane dehydrogenation technology for the production of polymer-grade propylene for its plant in Vietnam, Honeywell announced Tuesday.

Under the arrangement, Honeywell UOP will provide Phu My Plastics Production JSC with its C3 Oleflex technology, a low-emission, platinum-alumina-based catalyst system that transforms propane into propylene. The company will also furnish the Vietnamese firm with its process design package, proprietary and nonproprietary equipment, on-site training for operators, technical services for startup and for on-going operation, and the Honeywell’s proprietary catalysts and adsorbents.

“This Oleflex unit will use low-priced and widely available propane to make propylene, which can be made into polypropylene, one of the most important materials for making plastics,” Bryan Glover, vice president and general manager of Honeywell UOP’s Process Technology and Equipment business, in a company press release. “This new capacity will enable Vietnam to meet its own rapidly growing domestic demand for plastics, supplanting propylene products that it currently imports.”

C3 Oleflex technologyfeatures independent sections for reaction and regeneration, allowing users to improve the flexibility of their operations and increase reliability. According to Honeywell, Oleflex technology has been selected for “a majority” of propane and isobutene dehydrogenation projects initiated across the world since 2011.

Phu My Plastics Production JSC primarily manufactures plastic packaging products like polypropylene and polyethylene bags, flexible intermediate bulk containers (FIBCs), and woven polypropylene sheets.
