Cabot Opens New Fumed Silica Production Plant

Specialty chemicals and performance materials firm Cabot Corporation recently opened a new fumed silica manufacturing plant in Wuhai, Inner Mongolia, China capable of producing 8000 mt/yr to meet increasing demand in the Asian country, a company press release announced Monday.

“This strategic expansion of our fumed silica manufacturing capabilities will allow us to better reach our customers in a part of China where we expect to see significant growth and development in the coming years,” Jay Doubman, senior vice president and president, Performance Additives for Cabot.

Operated under a joint venture with Inner Mongolia Hengyecheng Silicone Co. Ltd. (HYC), Cabot holds an 80% interest in the Wuhai facility. HYC will provide feedstock to the site.

Demand for fumed silica is picking up in China, particularly in the construction, automotive, and infrastructure sectors, as the country’s urban population grows, according to Cabot.

“We look forward to pioneering innovative new solutions in fumed silicas by pairing our new world class Wuhai manufacturing facility with the technical expertise at our Asia Technology Center in Shanghai to help our customers drive toward a more sustainable future,” said Doubman.

Cabot has had a presence in China for more than three decades. The company current has manufacturing facilities in Jiangxi, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Xingtai.
