A fire at the Packaging Corporation of America plant in Burlington, WI on the afternoon of June 30 forced an evacuation of employees as firefighters combated the blaze for about six hours, several local news organizations reported.
First responders from five area fire departments went to the Burlington plant after receiving a call at 12:30 p.m. reporting smoke emanating from under the plant’s water and gas pipes, according to a report by the Racine Journal-Times.
An employee told the Journal-Times that the blaze started after paper was left on a conveyor belt over lunch. The friction of the paper against the conveyor’s parts started the fire, the worker said.
A Burlington Standard Press news photographer was told by an employee at the plant that a second fire occurred in a starch silo at the site.
Officials told the Journal-Times that the cause of the incident remains under investigation.
The Packaging Corporation of America (PCA) facility in Burlington produces corrugated shipping containers, high-impact graphics packaging, point-of-purchase displays, and point-of-sale packaging, according to PCA’s website.
