Custom Equipment Design Celebrates 30th Anniversary

Custom Equipment Design Inc. (CED), one of the nation’s largest bulk bag packaging equipment manufacturers, will celebrate its 30-year anniversary on October 7, 2010.

In 1980, the legacy of CED began when Charles “Chuck” DeCrane designed and manufactured the bulk bag filler, the very first of its kind in the U.S., providing the means for filling a bulk bag with dry, flowable product.

In 1990, CED moved into its current 45,000-sq-ft facility in Monroe, LA, providing turn-key service staffed by a mechanical and electrical engineering department, inside sales department, experienced welders, finishers, sheet metal, assembly, and control wiring departments.

In January 2010, DeCrane took a step towards semi-retirement by handing over the reins to his daughter, Sandy, and naming her president and CEO. Sandy brings more than 20 years experience at CED, ranging from purchasing, sales, shipping, receiving, inventory management, accounting, and more.

Despite the competition through the years, CED has proven to be a leader in the industry, developing numerous innovative, patented designs. Examples of CED’s “first in the industry” products include automatic bag release latches, ergonomic traversing bag latches and traversing spout, bulk bag densifiers, metering gate valves, automatic pallet dispensers. CED was also the first in the industry to provide NTEP-certified scales and UL-listed controls.

Part of CED’s reputation is based on maintaining the accuracy and repeatability of the products, while satisfying the customers’ demands for higher productivity with less operator intervention. This combination has led to additional system designs including bulk bag unloaders (dischargers), pallet stackers, slip sheet dispensers, bulk bag conditioners, bulk bag stackers, conveyor and transfer systems, etc.

CED’s customer base includes many Fortune 100 companies, including Dow Chemical, E.I. DuPont, Monsanto, Shell Chemical, Exxon/Mobil, Kraft Foods, Campbell’s Soup, BASF Corp., and many more. Installation sites include Chile, Australia, Malaysia, South America, Mexico, Canada, Peru, South Korea, Thailand, Singapore, Brazil, and Argentina, as well as across the U.S.
