People living near the plant told local media that they heard a loud noise during the incident at the facility.

Firefighters were called to the Husky Energy ethanol plant in Lloydminster, AB/SK on December 30 after a blaze started in a piece of equipment, according to Canadian news organizations.

Occupants of homes near the plant said they heard a loud noise come from the facility at about 10:30 p.m. in coverage by MyLloydminsterNow.com.

“There was a a fire last night in a dryer used in the Lloydminster ethanol plant,” a company spokesperson told CBC News in a statement. “It was quickly extinguished and there were no injuries.”

A sprinkler system activated and doused the flames, the news broadcaster said. Husky has halted operations at the site as an investigation is carried out.

Husky Energy announced Monday that it has completed a strategic combination with Cenovus Energy. The transaction transforms the two companies into the country’s third largest producer of crude oil and natural gas.
