American meat processor Smithfield Foods plans to invest some $45 million in the upgrade of its Sioux Falls, SD plant to renovate its high-speed bacon line, seasoned pork products operations, a distribution center, and a facility that houses about 8000 pigs.

The company intends to increase capacity at the Sioux Falls site in response to an uptick in domestic demand for bacon and a rise in demand for seasoned pork in international markets.

“Export markets are key for the continued growth of all U.S. hog producers and pork processors,” Jason Richter, president of the company’s international group, said in a Smithfield press release announcing the investment. “This new project further positions the company to meet the demands of consumers in these key markets, benefitting our national and local economies, including creating new jobs in Sioux Falls.”

Among the improvements to the facility, Smithfield said its distribution center at the plant is currently being rehabbed to incorporate new automated boxing, labeling, packaging, and stacking technology. The distribution capabilities are slated to come on line by March next year. The company also plans to install new equipment on the bacon line by May 2019 that will increase the yield, volume, and quality of bacon produced at the Sioux Falls site.

As part of the effort, Smithfield plans to add 70 new jobs at the plant’s existing headcount of 3600 workers. The site opened in 1909.
