Meat processing company Smithfield Foods revealed plans Thursday to invest $1.2 million in an expansion project at its Grayson, KY ham production plant that will lift the facility’s capacity by some 20%.

“In the last several years, our growth has allowed us to invest in our facilities and create new opportunities for those living in the communities we call home,” Jeff Salyer, plant manager of the Grayson facility, said in a company press release announcing the project. “We are proud to invest in Grayson and look forward to welcoming new members to the Smithfield Family at this facility, which helps put holiday hams and other mealtime favorites on millions of tables each year.”

The plant manufactures spiral sliced hams sold under the Smithfield brand. About 40 new full-time jobs will be created as a result of the expansion, bringing the facility’s headcount to more than 600 workers. New positions at the site include general production, engineering trainee, and maintenance.

Smithfield Foods, owned by Chinese firm WH Group, is the world’s largest pork processing firm.
