January 14, 2020

Frozen baked desserts, treats, and snacks manufacturer Sara Lee Frozen Bakery revealed this week that it will invest $19.8 million in an expansion of its Tarboro, NC production facility, the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina announced Monday. The One North Carolina Fund will provide a performance-based grant of $500,000 based on the company’s plans to create 108 new jobs at the site.

“Sara Lee Frozen Bakery recently celebrated the 30-year anniversary of our Tarboro bakery – a milestone that demonstrates the dedication of our employees and our commitment to the Tarboro community,” the firm’s chief executive officer, Craig Bahner, said in a statement. “We are so pleased to be the receipent of the One North Carolina grant, which will enable the expansion of our bakery, bolster production of our irresistible foods, and create more jobs in Edgecombe County.”

The Tarboro site is one of three bakeries operated by Sara Lee Frozen Bakery in Michigan, Massachusetts, and North Carolina. Frozen bakery and dessert products, like croissants, pound cake and muffins, are produced at the facility in North Carolina.

“This is the beginning of a new and exciting chapter of Sara Lee Frozen Bakery and we’re confident that Edgecombe County and North Carolina is the right place for the company to expand,” North Carolina Secretary of Commerce Anthony M. Copeland said in the release. “The company continues to innovate and perfect its operations and product mix and we’re proud to support them in their work.”

Sara Lee Frozen Bakery was established in 2018 when Tyson Foods sold the business to private equity firm Kohlberg & Company. The spin-off company contains the former Tyson brands Van’s, Bistro Collection, Sara Lee, and Chef Pierre.
