German private label pet food maker Saturn Petcare revealed Friday that the company plans to open a new manufacturing facility in Vigo County, Indiana in 2020, according to a press release issued by the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IDEC). By 2024, the company expects to employ some 200 workers at the facility.

The Hoosier State site will become Saturn Petcare’s first production facility in the U.S. when renovations of an existing 350,000-sq-ft former pharmaceutical production facility reach completion. Located in Vigo County Industrial Park II, the plant will contain production assets for wet cat and dog food packaged in aluminum trays.

“Over five years ago, Saturn Petcare started looking for sites throughout the U.S. to launch our first facility outside of Europe,” the firm’s chief executive officer, Hubert Schiermeier, said in a statement. “After exceeding requirements like having a strong infrastructure and being close in proximity to our customer base, it was clear that Vigo County was the right location for expansion into the U.S.”

IDEC approved performance-based tax credits amounting to $1.375 million linked to the German firm’s job creation plans, $1.69 million in conditional tax credits from the Industrial Recovery Tax Credit (DINO) program, and up to $100,000 in grants for training programs.

Saturn Petcare produces over 1500 varieties of wet and dry pet food and snack products, including pates and cat milk.
