Silica sand and polymeric proppants provider Preferred Sands recently opened its first frac sand mine in Poteet, TX as part of the company’s shift away from Northern White sand, the firm said in a Feb. 28 press release.
Planned to produce 3 million tn of finished goods annually, the Preferred Sands facility in Atascosa County has a wet and dry plant for high quality 40/70 and 100 mesh sand and storage silos, as well automated technology for loading trucks.
“The Atascosa facility, coupled with our second local plant opening in the near term in Monahans, TX, will ultimately add over 6 million tons of capacity available to our customers in both the Permian Basin and Eagle Ford Shale,” said Preferred’s chief executive officer and founder Michael O’Neill in a statement.
Divesting from its Northern White sand mine interests in Wisconsin and Minnesota in the past several years, Preferred Sands said it is focusing its efforts on finer sand located in Texas.
“Preferred’s renewed focus on local sand positions the company to have a unique multi-basin approach. This strategic localization strategy is driven by the company’s goal to drive down costs for customers,” the release said.
