Perstorp to Build Sodium Formate Deicer Plant in Europe

May 14, 2019

Specialty chemicals maker Perstorp recently revealed plans to build a new plant in Perstorp, Sweden that will produce solid Sodium Formate deicer products for use on airport runways. The facility will boost the firm’s capacity for its Pergrip Run NF brand of deicer.

“Until now we have been sourcing the granulates from multiple purpose compactors which has complicated the supply chain,” said Perstorp Supply Chain Manager Niklas Backman in a company press release. “This investment will help to streamline our operations. The plant, which will be based on state-of-the-art technology, will have a nameplate capacity of 12 kMT/yr and is due to begin operating ahead of the coming winter season.”

Perstorp’s new plant in Sweden will focus on granulation. Upon completion, the facility will increase the availability of the firm’s deicer product. Pergrip products are used by some of the leading airports in Europe, the company said. The deicers feature the lowest carbon footprint when compared to similar deicer products and low chemical oxygen demand (COD).

“When it comes to the challenge of keeping airports open even during prolonged winter conditions, the ability of the runway deicer to deliver is key. By being integrated all the way from Formate production to granulation, we’ll be able to offer our customers an even better level of service,” said Erik Himmer, business development director, Deicer, at Perstorp, in a statement. “This investment is also an important step in our work to establish Formate as a better choice from an environmental perspective for deicers in non-runway applications, compared to existing chloride-based alternatives.”
