PepsiCo Argentina recently shuttered its snacks, cookies, and soft drinks plant in Florida, near Buenos Aires, cutting 691 positions as the firm shifts production to Mar del Plata, various Argentinean news organizations reported, along with the English-language trade publication BeverageDaily.com.

“The objective of these plans is to ensure the growth and sustainable development of PepsiCo in Argentina in the long term,” a company statement said, Beverage Daily reported. “This change will allow the company to move forward in its process of transformation, adapting to the requirements of consumers.”

The company said it was moving to close the Florida plant because its location presented logistical challenges and higher costs.

Moving the plant’s operations to Mar del Plata offers “greater efficiency and closer proximity to the relationship with farmers and potato suppliers, as well as the implementation of an advanced technology that will allow us to meet national demand and exports,” PepsiCo’s statement said.

Beverage Daily’s coverage noted that the company’s move has drawn the ire of local unions representing the factory’s workers who have pledged to take action against the closure.
